of distant homes and new dwellings 2024
My digital collages are a visual exploration of the ever-shifting relationship between past and present, specifically focusing on the deeply personal experience of navigating the complex emotions tied to the concept of home – both lost and found. Through this medium, I delve into the layered feelings that arise when reflecting on these interwoven timelines of personal history. My process involves collecting fragments of moments – images, textures, and snippets of memories – and fusing them together into layered scenes. These compositions are not simply juxtapositions; they are carefully constructed to express the inherent tension that exists between the yearning for what was and the embrace of what is.
The act of layering is crucial to my work. Images are stacked and superimposed, edges blur and bleed, creating a sense of fluidity and transition. This process of melting one image into another mirrors the way memories themselves shift and change over time, becoming less distinct and more impressionistic. The resulting collages occupy a liminal space, a threshold between the familiar comfort of past homes and the sometimes-unsettling reality of new beginnings, where the boundaries of time become porous.
Within these layered landscapes, abandoned addresses, forgotten homes, and the faces of loved ones both present and absent come together. This interplay of integration and disintegration captures the ephemeral nature of time and the subjective way we experience it, particularly in relation to the concept of "home." The viewer is invited to navigate these layered narratives, piecing together fragments of personal stories and creating their own interpretations of the complex emotions embedded within the work, reflecting on their own experiences of loss, adaptation, and the search for belonging.
